5 simple tips to make you a better writer
I’ve been trying to improve my writing as fast as possible and I feel that I’ve made a huge amount of progress in the past few months. In this article, I’ll be sharing a few tips and pieces of advice you can try to help you improve your writing!
Be short and sweet
I recognise this in myself — when I’m reading articles I often skim read them, looking at the key points and sometimes making some highlights or notes.
This involves short sentences, lots of spacing and getting to the point quickly.
Understand when you write best
One of my biggest struggles as a writer is finding the time and motivation to churn out an article.
As much as I try to plan often I am digesting some interesting content and it inspires me to write an article (which is what I’m doing right now).
Ask yourself what time of day works best for you to write? I’ve tried writing early in the morning and sometimes it works but I think I now understand that I write best late at night (usually right before going to bed).
Reading makes you a better writer
It’s so true. I love reading and learning from other writers on Twitter, Medium and other blogs. Also, reading books has helped me but this is definitely something I am trying to work on! I’m going to try to read a lot more books, particularly on areas like how to improve my writing.
As I mentioned earlier, reading can give you a sudden burst of inspiration and even motivation to help you produce an article.
Simplify
Simplify everything as much as you can — make it understandable, easily digestible and convey your ideas in as few words as you can.
This also includes simplifying your writing process to make it as easy as possible for you to write an article.
Minimise the effort it takes to write and publish an article.
Write then edit
I’ve talked about this a few times (as have many other writers) but it really is fundamental to separate your writing process into two steps — write then edit.
As you can tell, I myself have a lot of room for improvement and with each article I write, I am learning a huge amount!
